چکیده

Different bio-inspired Bouligand thin-ply Carbon-Fibre-Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) laminates with a pitch angle as low 2.07∘ are realised, which is the smallest realised in literature. The therefore close angles found biological microstructures. Low-Velocity Impact (LVI) and residual compressive strength tests determined damage tolerance of structures. Investigated were two different interlaminar fracture toughnesses metal-Bouligand-CFRP-layups. results significantly higher strengths than 45∘ quasi-isotropic (QI) layups, despite lower proportion 0∘ fibres. Higher toughness hybridisation steel layers lead to reduced matrix without increasing strength. In-plane plane tension properties 2.59∘. reveal, that unnotched tensile lower. However, only helicoidal, sub-critical cracking no delaminations occur before final failure. leads almost notch sensitivity similar open-hole-tensile 45∘-QI layups number 0∘-fibres.

Embryonics + Immunotronics: A Bio-Inspired Approach to Fault Tolerance

Fault tolerance has always been a standard feature of electronic systems intended for long-term missions. However, the high complexity of modern systems makes the incorporation of fault tolerance a difficult task. Novel approaches to fault tolerance can be achieved by drawing inspiration from nature. Biological organisms possess characteristics such as healing and learning that can be applied t...

A bio-inspired, high-authority actuator for shape morphing structures

Lightweight structures capable of changing their shape on demand are of interest for a number of applications, including aerospace, power generation, and undersea vehicles. This paper describes a bioinspired cellular metal vertebrate structure which relies on shape memory alloy (SMA) faces to achieve fully reversing shape change. The resulting vertebrate actuators can be combined with flexible ...
